FROM NICE AIRPORT

You will have to follow the one way system to leave the airport and this will take you past the Total garage.

The garage will be on your right and is the best place to refill when returning your car. Beyond the garage the road splits around an old roundabout, where you will need to take the right filter lane and then the exit, heading north, which runs alongside the river. After a kilometre you will find yourself at another roundabout.

You go straight on at this roundabout and then once on the other side, move to the left hand lane which will set you up for the traffic lights at the flyover.

At this junction you will pass under the flyover and turn left onto a slip road.

This is the road for Digne and is the N202. Approximately 4.5km from the airport you will come to a roundabout characterised by a large brown and yellow sculpture. Go straight on.

Stay on this road for another 500m until you come to the next roundabout.

This is the smart car roundabout. Again you want to stay on the N202, but avoid the temptations to take the Autoroute turning. If you are unsure, just keep going round and round.

5km further on is another roundabout, which will be obvious by the blue street lamps that mark its’ approach. Another 6 km down the road is another roundabout. Then a further 5.5km along the N202 comes the third roundabout in this sequence, followed by the fourth only 500m beyond it. At this point you should be 22km into your journey.

If you have got this far, the rest is easy. Stay on the N202 for about 50 kilometres. You will pass through towns and villages. These include Plan du Var, Le Chaudan, Malaussene (where there is a level crossing) Villars sur Var and Touet sur Var. Eventually after about 50 kilometres you will cross the Cians river and the D28 will be immediately on your right.

Turn right onto the D28, heading for Gorges du Cians, Beuil, Les Launes and then Valberg. Just follow the signs for Valberg, it’s 30 kilometres from here.

When you arrive in Valberg, go straight on at the roundabout and then keep going up the hill until you reach the one way system. The Bar le Sapet will be in front of you at this point. From here its only 500 metres to Chalet Grand Fromage.

You can’t miss it!

If the Gorges du Cians is closed, then you need to continue on the N202 passing through Puget Theniers and Entrevaux, after which you will need to turn into the Gorge du Daluis. You will pass through Daluis and eventually come to Guillames. Here you will need to make a right hand turn and this road will lead you into the Valberg one way system, but from the opposite direction. Valberg is sign posted all the way.

FROM THE NORTH

This is a journey we have never done, so the following is only a suggestion.

From the Channel ports work your way south and east around Paris and Lyon to Grenoble.

From Grenoble take the N75 to Chateau-Arnoux and then the N85 to Digne-les-Bains. Continue along the N85 until there is a turning for the N202. Take this turning.

After about 30 miles (50 kilometres) there will be a turning for the Gorge du Daluis, Guillames and Valberg. Take this turning and follow the signs to Valberg.

If the Gorges du Daluis is closed, then you need to continue on the N202 passing through Entrevaux and Puget Theniers, after which you will need to turn left into the Gorge du Cians. You will pass through Beuil, Les Launes and eventually come to Valberg. This road will lead you into the Valberg one way system, but from the opposite direction. Valberg is sign posted all the way.
