History

One afternoon during a holiday in Valberg in January 2002, we went for a drive. This was not our first trip to Valberg, but it was our first time that we had looked beyond our immediate surroundings. We drove down to the stunning Gorge du Daluis at Guillames before returning via the small, but charming village of Peone. Back in Valberg we discovered the hairpin bend and the amazing vista there. Riding up to the top of town, the road then took us to the lower part of town. Somewhere along this road, it was suggested that it might be fun to own a chalet here. From that small kernel an idea had emerged by the time we had returned to our accommodation. Over dinner, the idea elaborated and the name Le Grand Fromage became the only choice.

By the May of 2002, we were in the process of purchasing the land and obtaining planning permission. After much discussion we decided to build a multi-purpose chalet, utilising a concrete lower shell and two wooden levels. A local French contractor built the lower concrete shell during the spring of 2003. Towards the end of that same year our Canadian contractors moved onto the site. The two wooden upper levels had arrived in France after a transatlantic voyage to Marseille. The two containers where then loaded onto the biggest lorries around and so began a tortuous journey from the coast to Valberg. They arrived on site late in the day during a snow flurry, but at last the chalet was there. Now it just had to be built. Our three Canadian builders constructed the two upper floors in an amazing three weeks. This involved utilising the latest construction technology and working long, long hours. By the end of 2003 the building looked complete.

Until you went inside. And so began phase two. During the spring of 2004 the internal works began. Everything within the chalet we have constructed ourselves, using our own talents, learning new ones and when necessary drafting in friends and family to help us in our quest. Only the plumbing and electrical work has been contracted out. After that, the chalet still had to be carpeted and furnished. We made our own curtains; we built our own furniture and eventually slept in our own beds! It has involved countless number of trips from England; so many that one dare not risk counting them all. However, by the summer of 2006, the work was complete and we think you will agree, well worth it.

It is our intention to give all our customers a memorable holiday and a reason to return. Enjoy your stay!
